Runners are beginning to mark their calendars for November 22nd 2007, when they will work up a really big appetite in the 14th annual Run For The Hungry 5K Race, presented by the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. Participants will answer the start gun at 8 a.m. sharp, rain or shine, on Thanksgiving morning along the streets of La Cañada Flintridge. Collection of non-perishable food items will happen again this year. All participants are encouraged to bring a canned food item on race day to donate. They will be distributed by the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station. Canned foods may also be dropped off any time this month at the Community Center. Drop-off locations include the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge, Palm Crest Elementary and Billy's Board Shop. For more details call (818) 790-4353.

More than 1,000 runners participated in the event last year and organizers are expecting nearly 1,500 to run this year. The out and back course follows Foothill Boulevard through La Cañada Flintridge, and will be a challenge for runners from the start. The race will head westward with a slight uphill climb in the beginning, but the course heads downhill at the 2.5 mile mark, so runners can expect excellent finishing times for the race.

Entry fees are $25 for adults (age 12 and up) and $15 for children, until Nov. 20. After that time fees increase to $30 for adults and $20 for children. Entry forms can be found here, at the Community Center, 4469 Chevy Chase Drive or Billy’s Board Shop, 2301 Verdugo Road.

Volunteers are needed for the morning, race day. Volunteers need to arrive at the Memorial Park awake and enthusiastic at 6:30 a.m. promptly and can stay until 10am. Coffee and breakfast will be provided. Volunteers will be responsible for working at the registration booths, passing out water, assisting with the finish line, handing out tee shirts, awarding medals, etc. We will have an orientation meeting before the event to go over instructions.
